Mobile loans in Uganda – MoKash, Airtel Wewole and how to borrow safely
MoKash: *165# → Financial Services → MoKash (about 6% for 7 days). Airtel Wewole: *185#.
Need a small loan fast? MTN and Airtel offer loans on your phone. Here's how they work – and what they really cost.
MTN MoKash
- Run by MTN with NCBA Bank.
- Dial *165# → Financial Services → MoKash.
- Your limit depends on your MoMo usage.
- Fees reported by MTN: about 6% for a 7-day loan and 9% for a 28-day loan; overdue loans attract further charges.
- MoKash also lets you save and earn interest.
Airtel Wewole
- Run by Airtel with JUMO.
- Dial *185# → Wewole (or Loans).
- Limits grow as you repay on time.
Airtel Quick Loan (a separate product) has been reported at a 2% application fee plus 1% interest per day over 15 days.
What a "small" fee really costs
A 9% fee for 28 days is more than 100% a year. Mobile loans are fine for emergencies, but expensive for long-term needs.
Warning: use only loans from banks, MTN/Airtel, or lenders licensed by the Bank of Uganda or the Uganda Microfinance Regulatory Authority (UMRA). Illegal loan apps harass borrowers and misuse phone contacts.
