Checked 4 November 2026

Relatives abroad can send money straight to your MTN MoMo or Airtel Money wallet in minutes.

  • WorldRemit
  • Taptap Send
  • Remitly
  • Wise
  • ACE Money Transfer
  • MTN MoMo's own international remittance service

How it works

  1. The sender downloads the app and chooses Uganda → Mobile money.
  2. They enter your phone number (registered in your name) and the amount.
  3. You receive an SMS when the money arrives.

Receiving is free. You only pay normal withdrawal fees and the 0.5% withdrawal tax if you cash out.

Tips

  • Compare the exchange rate each app offers, not just the fee – the rate often costs more.
  • Make sure the name on the SIM matches the name given to the sender.
  • For large amounts, a bank transfer (SWIFT) may be better.
