How to transfer vehicle ownership in Uganda (logbook transfer)
Validate logbook online (free) → sign transfer forms → pay by PRN → submit. 1–3 working days. Must be done within 3 months of sale.
When you buy or sell a vehicle in Uganda, the ownership must be transferred within 3 months of the sale. Until it is transferred, the seller remains the legal owner – and is responsible for fines and accidents.
Documents you need
- Original logbook
- Transfer forms signed by both seller and buyer (stamped if the seller is a company)
- Sale agreement (with stamp duty paid)
- National IDs of both parties
- TINs of both parties
Steps
- Validate the logbook online (free). Old manual logbooks must be validated before a transfer can happen.
- Fill in the transfer forms and attach the documents.
- Generate a PRN for the transfer fee and pay at a bank or with mobile money.
- Submit through the vehicle registration system (now handled by the Ministry of Works and Transport licensing office, with payments via URA).
- Approval usually takes 1–3 working days. Collect the new logbook.
How much does a vehicle transfer cost?
The fee depends on the vehicle class and is shown when you generate your PRN. URA lists UGX 104,000 for commercial vehicles, trailers and tractors. Always pay using a PRN – never cash to an agent.
Scam alert: before buying a used car, confirm the logbook details (chassis and engine number) match the vehicle and that the seller is the registered owner.
